カンツバキ（寒椿）

サザンカと椿との交配種と考えられています。大気汚染や排気ガスに強く丈夫で刈込に耐えるため、生垣や公園樹として市街地などで広く植栽されています。
分類上はサザンカの仲間に含まれます。「サザンカ」と判定しても間違いではありません。

特徴
サザンカよりも遅く、11月下旬から真冬、そして3月頃まで開花する（ツバキの多くは早春咲き）。
花色にマゼンタ（鮮やかな赤紫色）を含む。花弁が散る（ツバキは花のまま落ちる）。
細かな毛が、枝先、葉の裏の葉脈、蕾、子房などに生えている。（ヤブツバキは無毛）
雄しべは皿のように開く
葉が小型で、葉の縁の鋸歯が目立つ。
野生では存在せず、全て植栽。
