Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) foraging in shallow water wetland, Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, California, USA
Fledgling did not move on approach. My first impression was that it was a meadowlark because it seemed too large to be a horned lark, and not precocial enough to be a quail/chukar. Horned lark, or possibly nighthawk are also possibilities! All suggestions welcome.
Very rare along SCC bayshore. Seen flycatching from several shrubs along trail. ID confirmed by Matthew D.
