nestling is getting its long ears started.....
This bird ate about half of the Antelope Ground Squirrel it had hunted then flew off with the remainder towards the nest tree, likely for the incubating female.
one of the nestlings trying to get out from under the adult female's wing
male of the resident pair gathering sticks for the nest
the female of the resident pair. She has just called (kek kek) for the male who was in the nearby nest doing what looked like final preparations for occupancy by the female - adding more sticks and moving others around.
In this and the last photo in the series the distended belly of the female can be seen. These photos were taken about three days before she took to the nest to incubate (either April 6 or 7).
The second photo shows the male approaching within two minutes of the call from the female
The third and fourth photos are of the mating.
The last photo is after the mating, the male's lower body is visible at the lower right side of the photo
my first observation of this bird (I believe it to be the same one throughout) was on February 13 and it has been feeding here almost every day since then, mainly on pocket gophers in the orchard area and crawfish in the creek.
first winter male in sub-adult plumage with some retained juvenile coloration on flight feathers
this is presumably the male of the nesting pair
