Αναγνώριση ειδών - Species identification
Ένα ακόμα ξενικό είδος που πολλοί μπορεί να μπερδέψουν με το αυτόχθονο είδος κρεμμύδι Apogon imberbis, είναι η ακανθόπερκα ή ρώσος Sargocentron rubrum.
Η ακανθόπερκα, με φυσική εξάπλωση στην Ερυθρά θάλασσα και στον δυτικό Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό, εισήλθε στη Μεσόγειο μέσω της διώρυγας του Σουέζ και παρατηρήθηκε για πρώτη φορά το 1947. Έχει έντονο κόκκινο χρώμα με οριζόντιες μαύρες και άσπρες γραμμές, που του προσδίδουν την ονομασία σκιουρόψαρο (Squirellfish) ή ρώσος (Redcoat) στα Αγγλικά και μπορεί να φτάσει σε μέγεθος τα 32 εκατοστά.
Εντοπίζεται σε βάθη μέχρι και τα 80 μέτρα, κυρίως σε βραχώδεις βυθούς και σε βραχώδεις κοιλότητες. Στο εδρικό πτερύγιο υπάρχει ένα αγκάθι το οποίο περιέχει μικρή ποσότητα δηλητηρίου ενώ το ψάρι είναι βρώσιμο και καταναλώνεται σε Κύπρο, Ρόδο και Κρήτη. Πολλές φορές υπάρχει σύγχυση στην κοινή ονομασία των δύο αυτών ειδών καθώς σε πολλές περιοχές χρησιμοποιούν τα ίδια κοινά ονόματα και για τα δύο είδη.

Another species that get people confused when it come to identification is the native Apogon imberbis, and the alien redcoat Sargocentron rubrum.
Redcoat is found in the Red Sea and the western Pacific Ocean. The species invaded the eastern Mediterranean via the Suez Canal in 1947.
The main features of the species are its bright red color with horizontal black and white lines, which give it the name redcoat, while its size can reach 32 cm.
Its natural habitat is at depths up to 80m and mainly rocky substrates.
It has a venomous spine at the anal fin which contains a small amount of poison but the fish is edible and it is consumed in Cyprus, Rhodes, and Crete. Often these two species in many areas get confused and people use the same common names for both species.
