On August 26-27, 2013, Macaulay Honors College and the Central Park Conservancy partnered to conduct a 24 hour BioBlitz of Central Park. The last BioBlitz of the whole park was done in 2003.
At our 2013 BioBlitz, over 300 sophomores teamed up with about 40 scientists to find a total of 571 different species in the park, including a few that had never been seen before there. We achieved our two main goals for the BioBlitz: educating students about the science of ecology in the city and cataloguing as many species as we could in 24 hours. Students got a rich experience with real scientific data collection in a complex ecosystem and also had a great time.
We also collected data on paper data sheets (that's why the numbers above differ from the project stats). For full results, go here: https://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/bioblitz/2014/09/22/bioblitz-2013-data-central-park/
