The aim of the Senda Darwin Biological Station is to facilitate scientific research, environmental education and the application of knowledge to the conservation of the temperate forests of Chile.
The Senda Darwin Biological Station is about 10 km S of Ancud on the R5.
Established in 2003, with SDBS CONAF recognition as a Private Protected Wildlife Area, it is managed to conserve the local ecosystems, as part of the "Valdivian forest zone : Private-public-mechanisms for biodiversity conservation" project. Funding was provided by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the Center for Environmental Research and Planning in collaboration with FSD CIPMA .
It comprises three properties over 113 ha, comprising about 1/3 farmland of scrub and grassland area, with the remainder secondary forest typical of Chiloé, which is managed for environmental education, restoration, research and monitoring.
