Based on reported ranges either C. castaneitarsis or C. concolor, but I was unable to find any reference to make a positive ID,
A green chiton attached to a half crab. We observed this alien looking commensal beast while undertaking an intertidal survey on the reefs off Hawera. It made us jump when we first turned over the rock.
There is a male and female, no photo of male as hiding in hedge. Thought they were sparrows as seen with them and same size but did not fly away with them when spooked. Also the female had interesting tail action, fanning it to a beat and which flashed a tan feather on each side. Eat off ground / table. The female raised her feather on top of her head to form a crest
