All Day Rain

The water was speaking all day. Beginning with whispers in the morning on the window glass, raging off and on in the afternoon on the metal roof, the rain eventually lost its voice after dark, murmuring and repeating itself as dripped from the trees, as if water might talk in its sleep.

The Welsh poet Dylan Thomas understood such weather. Here are a few lines from his poem 'Especially when the October wind':

"Some let me make you of the vowelled beeches,
Some of the oaken voices, from the roots
Of many a thorny shire tell you notes,
Some let me make you of the water's speeches."
