Featured observation: American Emerald

The American emerald is a widespread species of dragonfly across North America, ranging all the way from Alaska and the Yukon to the very tip of Newfoundland. This mostly-black dragonfly with emerald-green eyes makes its home around water bodies like small lakes, marshes and bogs, where it hunts for soft-bodied flying insects.
Among the earlier dragonflies to emerge in the spring, the American emerald is typically more active in cooler temperatures. Like its adult form, the American emerald naiad is quite tolerant of cold water, but may require more than one year to mature if the water is on the colder side.

La cordulie de Shurtleffer est une espèce de libellule très répandue en Amérique du Nord, qui s'étend de l'Alaska et du Yukon jusqu'à la pointe de Terre-Neuve. Cette libellule principalement noire aux yeux vert émeraude vit autour des plans d'eau comme les petits lacs, les marais et les tourbières, où elle chasse les insectes volants.
Parmi les premières libellules à émerger au printemps, la cordulie de Shurtleffer est généralement plus active lorsque les températures sont plus fraîches. Comme sa forme adulte, la naïade tolère assez bien l'eau froide, mais il lui faut parfois plus d'un an pour arriver à maturité si l'eau est plus froide.
