GUEST SPEAKERS

JESSE LEWIS | ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
Jesse is an applied ecologist who evaluates a diversity of research questions to inform the conservation and management of wildlife populations in the southwestern US. He is an assistant professor at Arizona State University. Jesse and his graduate students work across the ecologically diverse landscapes of Arizona, ranging from the Sonoran desert of the Phoenix Valley evaluating urban ecology of coyotes, bobcats, deer, bats, and other wildlife to the high elevation ponderosa pine and aspen forests in the White Mountains evaluating how wildlife (e.g., black bear, elk, mountain lion, mule deer, wolves, and other species) respond to mixed-severity wildfire.

NATALIE MELKONOFF | GREAT MILKWEED GROW OUT, DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN
Natalie Melkonoff is the Plant and Insect Ecology Program Coordinator at Desert Botanical Garden. She coordinates the activities of Great Milkweed Grow Out, the Garden’s monarch butterfly and pollinator conservation initiative, including the production of native milkweeds and pollinator plants for urban and wildlands conservation projects and community science outreach. Her current research is focused on how milkweed physiology changes due to climate shifts may impact how monarchs and other insects use these plants in the future.

GEORGE ROARK | POLLINATOR WEB, ECOFLORA PROJECT MEMBER
George is a retired Electrical Engineer and Instructional Designer who discovered an avenue for his gardening passion through the MetroPhoenix EcoFlora Project. Over 6,000 observations later, the project has proven to be an educational journey, and a new way to meet like-minded friends and acquaintances. He’s now busy creating a web site to share knowledge about pollinators and the supporting web of plants and other characters in the low desert.
