2022 City Nature Challenge!

Can you believe it? It's almost time for the 2022 City Nature Challenge! 😯

April 29 through May 2, the Greater Phoenix Area will participate in the 2022 City Nature Challenge (CNC).
🌎 This is an important, fun, and accessible event to observe and document as much urban biodiversity as possible while engaging in community science. Last year the Greater Phoenix Area placed 30th in the world out of over 400 urban areas! Using iNaturalist, anyone can get involved and share observations, anywhere from neighborhoods to local parks. Over 400 cities around the globe participate in this event and every year it gets bigger. We will also be having another Southwest Competition this year, let's see if we can beat Albuquerque and El Paso for first place!

Results of the challenge will be announced on May 9.

Join the project here.

  1. Download the iNaturalist app
  2. Create a free iNaturalist account
  3. Search for the "City Nature Challenge 2022: Greater Phoenix Area" project and join
  4. Make observations and share them! You observations will automatically be included in the project.

You can also participate online.

If you are not able to get out and make observations, or you enjoy the challenge of identifying species more, you can help identify observations on iNaturalist from May 3-8.

We need your help! The Metro Phoenix EcoFlora project, along with Educating Children Outdoors (ECO), City of Chandler Community Services, and Barrett, the Honors College at ASU are co-organizing the event for the Greater Phoenix Area, and are looking for participants and collaborators.
