Some sort of gall leaf blister? @megachile
an earlier observation here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/221446135
these sawflies completely defoliated the Rudbeckia laciniata in my 'yarden', nothing left among a half dozen or more plants.
At this stage I collected about a dozen larvae or more and put in a jar with moistened peat. They were clinging to the defoliated stems which were quite latex-y and aromatic. I put a sprig of defoliated leaf veins and stems in the jar and they instantly gravitated towards it.
I've had Rudbeckia laciniata planted in my yard now for probably 7 years or so and I've never observed the sawflies, and certainly never this level of defoliation, impressive!
