Pipevine swallowtail on Aristolochia tomentosa.
Suspected only NPV until comment above.
Host plant is a 3 year old vine in yard soil (not container, not inside). "Black deaths" started happening in Sept. 2023: climbing up to hang upside down by back legs while body becomes flaccid then liquifies and drips, splashes onto everything below. Bleach solution did not disinfect vine and surfaces enough.
I removed vine in winter, but it grew back.
Update June 2024 the renewed vine now killing caterpillars with the first generation of egg to late instars. Tried bleach solution. Plant receives no more than 4 hours of direct sun per day.
Removed plant again. Whatver it is, is only happening on this one plant in the yard and I don't want it to spread. Put cuttings etc. in separate bag for trash and cleaned tools etc.
on Woolly Dutchman's Pipevine. This was taken 9 days after observing adult Pipevine Swallowtail laying eggs on this plant.
