Saw this small little guy running across the road. It ducked into hole and seemed to have a few tunnels under the thick moss. Looked out for a few pictures before running off across another road and disappearing.
I'd guess it was about 6 or 7 cm, no more than 8, not counting the tail, which was relatively short (maybe 2 or 3 cm).
This is a video of a Ptarmigan (not sure if the video loaded, I tried to get a picture after taking a video but it flew into the tree's). These grouse are most known for their Alaskan slang name "stupid chicken". Why you may ask? Because you can get incredibly close to them while driving or walking up to them and they don't move until they are spooked because they prefer walking to conserve their energy. In the fall they are found along dirt roads near wooded area's because they eat gravel and spruce needles. The ptarmigan are subsistent to the area because locals often kill them for another means of it. They most certainly be a tasty bird if cooked right. I personally hunt them to preserve their feathers to make dream catchers and jewelry because they are an easily accessible bird and there is a large population of them.
